President Donald Trump has accepted an invitation from New York Knicks owner James Dolan to attend the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden next week.
The longtime Knicks fan and New York native revealed on Thursday that he may attend both Game 3 on Monday and Game 4 on Wednesday of the NBA Finals.
“The answer is yes — he’s invited me, I’m going,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, when asked about Dolan’s invitation.
The New York Knicks, who are seeking their first championship since 1973, will be taking on the San Antonio Spurs. Prior to Friday night’s Game 2 in Texas, New York leads 1-0.
Trump stated that he watched the opening game and came away highly impressed by the performance of the Spurs’ towering center, Victor Wembanyama.
“[Wembanyama] is a great player,” he said. “He’s going to be a great player. He’s already a great player. I said, ‘How do you guard this guy?’ He’s 7-foot-5 and has a great shot.”
NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated that the president is more than welcome to attend, noting that his presence marks the first time a sitting president will attend an NBA Finals game.
“President Trump is very much a New Yorker,” Silver said. “I’m thrilled another New Yorker wants to participate in the enthusiasm and the joy around this Knicks team.”
Additional security will be utilized by the NBA in order to accommodate Trump’s attendance.
“There should be extra security for the president of the United States to be at a game, but I think the fans are very understanding of that,” Silver said. “I think they recognize that it adds to the bigness of the event.”
