After months of uncertainty, President Donald Trump has revealed that he is backing state Attorney General Ken Paxton in the race to be the next Senator of Texas.
On Tuesday, the president posted his highly anticipated announcement to Truth Social. This comes one week before the Republican runoff election between Paxton and longtime Senator John Cornyn.
“Ken Paxton has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next United States Senator from the Great State of Texas – KEN PAXTON WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” the president wrote.
In his post, Trump emphasized that Paxton has been “extremely loyal” to him and to the “AMAZING MAGA MOVEMENT.” The president also highlighted Paxton’s conservative track record and support for key Republican priorities.
“I know Ken well, have seen him tested at the highest and most difficult levels, and he is a WINNER!” Trump said. “Ken is a Strong Supporter of TERMINATING THE FILIBUSTER and, very importantly, THE SAVE AMERICA ACT.”
After neither Paxton nor Cornyn secured the 50% threshold needed to clinch the Republican nomination in the crowded March primary, the top two vote-receivers advanced to a runoff election on May 26th.
Prior to the initial primary, Trump had refused to endorse either candidate, opting to remain neutral in the race. His endorsement comes as early voting for the runoff election begins.
“There are those that say whoever I endorse is going to win,” President Trump continued. “I don’t know if that’s true, but historically, that’s absolutely true. I just don’t like to say it because I don’t like to brag.”
