A murder investigation has been launched after a man’s life was taken in “the most brutal way” in the Peak District.
Police were called to reports of a man’s body being found at Nine Ladies Stone Circle in Stanton Lees at 1.38pm on Monday, with the discovery coming after the celebration of the summer solstice.
Emergency services attended, but the 26-year-old victim, who has not yet been formally identified, was pronounced dead. His family has been informed, police said, and are being supported by specialist officers.
Detective inspector Tony Owen, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said the man’s life had been “taken in the most brutal way, so it is vital that myself and the team build up a clear picture of the exact circumstances surrounding his death”.
He added: “We know that there have been a lot of people in the area of Nine Ladies Stone Circle over the weekend celebrating the summer solstice and this incident will undoubtedly be shocking and distressing to those who were present, as well as the wider community.
“We are currently working to understand the circumstances of this man’s death so I would urge anyone who was at the site over the weekend, as well as anyone with any information, to please get in touch with us.”
The stone circle is traditionally believed to depict nine ladies turned to stone for dancing on a Sunday.
